BOOK TITLE: ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS
AUTHOR: STEPHANIE PERKINS
STANDALONE – FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES
Anna had everything figured out – she was about to start senior year with her best friend, she had a great weekend job, and her huge work crush looked as if it was finally going somewhere… Until her dad decides to send her 4383 miles away to Paris. On her own.
But despite not speaking a word of French, Anna finds herself making new friends, including Étienne St. Clair, the smart, beautiful boy from the floor above. But he’s taken – and Anna might be too. Will a year of romantic near misses end with the French kiss she’s been waiting for?
Anna: Like every main character, she had her flaws and insecurities – afraid of being alone and according to Josh “She abandons her friend” but she’s pretty much, a typical teenage. Sent to Paris by her father to finish her senior year of high school and resenting him for it.
Anna loves movies and writes reviews on them on her website. She hopes to be a popular movie critic which I found relatable because, I love books and write about them on my blog.
She’s fun, attractive but for me she’s a pretty forgettable character.
Étienne St. Clair: Étienne or should I say St. Clair, since Anna is the only one who is allowed to call him that and his mum, he’s my favourite character. Most books I read, the male main character is always about six feet tall and the girl about 5’something inches. The girl has to raise her head to look at his eyes and the boy has to look down at her. .
St. Clair is short but ‘he doesn’t carry himself like a short person’. He is really cute, attractive, charming and charismatic. He has The aura around him that you can’t help but love him.
He is afraid to take a risk though with his mother being sick and coming in terms with his true feelings for Anna.
Rashmi and Josh:
The story was told from Anna point of view so I didn’t get to know much of their relationship like I would have liked to. Like Josh, he always skipped classes and got detention but at the same time, he’s a really talented artist and I wanted to know more of what was going on with him. Though we are made to know that it’s because his friends are living school.
My first impression of Rashmi was ‘oh that bithchy girl’. Just like Anna, the first impression was cleared and I learn that’s she’s actually smart, a great and supportive friend.
Meredith: When I started this book I was scared that Meredith would turn out to be one of those girls who are like, “you dare like a boy that I’ve been crushing on since forever and tried to move things further with him, so i hate you for all eternity.” But she turned out to be real sweet, forgiving and a good friend. I love the fact that she didn’t let the relationship between Anna and St. Clair to affect her friendship with either one of them.
“I bought you love poetry! ‘I love you as certain dark things are loved, secretly, between the shadow and the soul.’”
There were a lot of misunderstanding which Stephanie Perkins used to drive the plot forward. At the beginning of the book, St. Clair had a girlfriend – Ellie who he have been with for a while and Anna had a guy she was interested with back in America – Toph. I think its worthy to add that I didn’t space out (I.e didn’t get bored) while reading this book.
This book is the type of book I would always recommend to a friend. I love its simplicity, every page was beautiful and it was thrilling to watch as young love blossom.
With this book, I know I would definitely start reading more of Stephanie Perkins.
